Things kick off with the loose, goofy “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35,” with its immortal refrain “I would not feel so all alone / everybody must get stoned,” followed by a chorus of cheers and shouts from some unseen peanut gallery. There’s a sort of “fuck you” attitude to this album that’s really appealing, as if Dylan were responding to his harsher critics by offering something even less like what they expected from him. It steps away from the fast-paced blues rock of its predecessor and into stoned, laid back blues jams and sparse ballads. Where the previous album was concise and played with Dylan’s tight backing band, Blonde On Blonde takes its time, spread over two discs and well over an hour runtime. The original featured a shot of Claudia Cardinale (who, believe it or not, some speculated was Dylan in drag) but the photo was used without her permission, so it was removed.After the uproar surrounding Highway 61 and its subsequent tour, Dylan went even further into the ether with his first double album, Blonde On Blonde, the following year. There was a curious change to the album sleeve a couple of year's after its release when, in 1968, Columbia revised the album cover's inside gatefold.

Yes, there are still some lightweight numbers such as I Want You, but there are also touching ballads, notably Visions Of Johanna, with its surreal lyrics, and stunners like Just Like A Woman and Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands. Not only that, there's more than 70 minutes of poetic observation to savour. While it's preceding album Highway 61 was wonderful rock & roll, Blond On Blond is more blues orientated and soon established its reputation as being a Bob Dylan masterpiece.
